Located at the gateway to the U.S. Military Academy and overlooking the Hudson River in New York’s Hudson River Valley, The Thayer Hotel has long stood as a symbol of tradition, service, and hospitality. Since its opening on June 3, 1926, where the hotel was hailed as a “dream come true” and “the greatest improvement in many, many years at West Point”, the hotel has welcomed generations of guests and played host to moments connected to American military, civic, and cultural history. During World War II, nicknamed the “General’s Hotel”, figures like Eisenhower, MacArthur, and Patton used the hotel’s secure, formal environment to discuss strategy and leadership. Later, in 1981, the 52 freed Americans held captive in Iran, spent three days at the Thayer for medical check-ups and emotional reunions. They dined in the restaurant and signed a copy of the menu that hangs in the hotel on the mezzanine level.
