The Golden Scoop Takes Its Original Shop on the Road With Its First Food Truck

Overland Park nonprofit will close its first location at 9540 Nall Ave. and roll out a mobile shop that brings more shifts to Super Scoopers and more ice cream to every corner of Kansas City

OVERLAND PARK, Kan., Oct. 5, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — The Golden Scoop, a nonprofit ice cream and coffee shop where adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities scoop, pour and run the show, is putting its original shop on wheels. The flagship location at 9540 Nall Ave. will serve its final cones on Saturday, Oct, 31st, and its team, equipment and spirit are moving into the organization’s first food truck – available now to book for offices, schools, ballfields, festivals and backyard parties across the metro.

The Golden Scoop Logo

The shop opened in April 2021 to lines that wrapped around the strip center. It outgrew its space almost immediately, and a second, larger location with a drive-thru followed at 10460 W. 103rd St., less than 3 miles away. With two storefronts that close together, the team saw a bigger opportunity: stop waiting for Kansas City to come in, and go meet it.

“9540 is where our Super Scoopers first put on the apron, and we will always love this little shop,” said Amber Schreiber, CEO of The Golden Scoop. “But our mission was never about four walls. A truck lets us show up at games, office parties and other events all over the city. That means more shifts, more people trained, and a lot more of Kansas City meeting our Super Scoopers face to face.”

A bigger stage for Super Scoopers

Events happen at different times and places than a storefront, which opens up new kinds of shifts and new skills: setting up for a crowd, serving on the move and working as a tight crew. Every Super Scooper currently working at 9540 will continue with The Golden Scoop at the 103rd Street shop and on the truck.

“Nothing about who we are is changing,” said Allison Woodland, COO at The Golden Scoop. “Same Super Scoopers, same ice cream, same smiles. They just get to share it with a whole lot more people now.”

Launched during National Disability Employment Awareness Month

The move comes during National Disability Employment Awareness Month, observed every October. The Golden Scoop opened the month on Oct. 1 with the launch of its Celebrity Scooper program, featuring Kansas State Treasurer Steven Johnson behind the counter, and is closing it out by taking its mission further than any single storefront could.

One last scoop at 9540

Fans are invited to stop by 9540 Nall Ave. one more time before October, 31st to celebrate the spot that started it all. After that, the 103rd Street shop is just down the road, and the truck is only a booking away.

The truck joins a presence that already reaches well beyond the shops, including Golden Scoop pints and cups at area grocery stores and the Golden Connection program, which brings Golden Scoop products into special education classrooms in the Blue Valley, Olathe and Shawnee Mission school districts. A public ribbon cutting for the truck will be announced later this fall.
