An Interview with KLARQ

In Ibiza, architecture is never just about buildings. It’s about light, shadow, silence, and restraint. Few studios understand this as instinctively as KLARQ, the Ibiza-based architecture and interior design practice founded by Lluis and his wife Kim.

Rooted in Mediterranean tradition yet guided by contemporary precision, KLARQ doesn’t chase trends. Instead, it strips spaces back to their essence, creating homes that feel grounded, coherent, and deeply connected to the island itself.

We sat down with Lluis to discuss his practice, his philosophy, and how Ibiza’s architectural landscape is evolving.

Who are you and where are you?

I am Lluis. I founded KLARQ alongside my wife, Kim. We are based right here in Ibiza, but our practice is built on deep Mediterranean roots. We understand the lifestyle, the light, and the culture because it is where we come from.

What do you do?

We do architecture and interior design, but I prefer to say we create coherence. We take a client’s chaotic mix of dreams and needs and filter them into spaces that are functional, beautiful, and calm. We handle everything from the first sketch to the final piece of furniture.

What makes what you do different?

It is about a return to the essence. We set ourselves apart by looking back to the origin, rather than following the latest fad. We focus on raw, natural materials, honest stone, untreated wood, tactile plaster, and let them speak for themselves. We strip away the artificial layers to find the beauty in the imperfection of nature. It’s not about “decoration”; it’s about creating spaces that feel grounded, authentic, and timeless.

What was your inspiration behind your practice?

It was born from a desire to tame the light. The inspiration has always been the island’s raw honesty—the weight of the stone, the depth of the shadows, the silence of the countryside. We wanted to take that ancient, rustic Mediterranean soul and frame it with contemporary rigor. It isn’t just about building; it is about finding the perfect balance between the wildness of the landscape and the precision of modern living.

How have trends changed over the years in Ibiza, from when you began until now?

It has been a fascinating evolution. For years, ‘modern’ meant ‘transparent.’ We saw a lot of glass boxes that looked spectacular in photos but often felt like aquariums to live in. The real shift, and the twist, is that we’ve realised transparency isn’t the only way to connect with nature. Sometimes, a glass wall actually separates you from the landscape. Now, we are moving towards integration. We are burying houses into the terrain, using local stone and green roofs. We aren’t just placing a box on the landscape; we are weaving the house into it. It’s less about showing off, and more about belonging.

What are the biggest design trends now and what’s coming next?

Right now, it’s about “Quiet Luxury” and authenticity. Clients are moving away from the shiny and white; they want tactility. Earthy tones, natural stone, wood that looks like wood. Coming through: Sustainability that isn’t just a buzzword. We’re seeing a return to vernacular wisdom, passive cooling, local materials, mixed with high-tech home integration. Less “look at me,” more “feel good here.”

How has your client changed?

They are much more educated on design now. They don’t just want a holiday crash pad; they want a home that tells a story. They value privacy and quality over flashiness. They want us to guide them, not just draw for them.

What are the projects you’re working on now, and most proud of? Any celebrities!?

We are currently finishing a comprehensive renovation that balances pure, contemporary lines with the rustic soul of the island. I’m proud of it because it proves you don’t have to choose between “modern” and “traditional” if you have the right criteria, you can have both. As for the high-profile names… my lips are sealed! We act as a vault for our clients. Absolute discretion is a fundamental part of our practice, so while I can’t drop names, I can say we are used to working with people who expect the very best.

KLARQ represents a quieter, deeper kind of Ibiza luxury, one rooted in restraint, material honesty, and respect for place.

In an island often defined by excess, their work is a reminder that true luxury is calm.
