WHAT: A new photography and listening installation at Wrensilva | Los Angeles pairs Linda McCartney’s music photography with the album covers that featured her work, alongside Wrensilva record consoles where vinyl copies can be played. Artists featured include The Beatles, The Cimarons, Denny Laine, Paul McCartney, The Pretenders, Professor Longhair, and Neil Young.

BACKGROUND: Linda McCartney (née Eastman, 1941 – 1998) didn’t direct her subjects. She was already in the room, camera in hand, while some of the most magnetic artists of her generation lived their lives around her. Her professional photography career began with shooting musicians, and music photography continued as a steady thread throughout her life.
McCartney had a particular skill for putting musicians at ease and producing uniquely unguarded portraits. For the most part, she rejected the stiff studio setups in favour of informal settings and nature. She preferred prolonged shooting sessions where exchanging knowledge and enthusiasm for the music shared space with the photography itself. She photographed people as she found them, never encouraging contrived performance for her lens.
Photography connected with all of the facets of her career and life – musician, activist, food entrepreneur, family documentarian. Her photographs on display here were used on album covers. Some were the result of official commissions from record labels; some were personal photographs lifted out of their intimate context. Shown here beside the records that enshrined them, to be enjoyed alongside the albums themselves, which are available to play on a Wrensilva record console.
