Proposed agreement includes a $250,000 quick-pay option and individual claim evaluation as Legal Bay continues providing pre settlement funding for clergy sexual abuse survivors.
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Oct. 8, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Legal Bay LLC, a nationwide provider of pre settlement funding, settlement funding, lawsuit funding, lawsuit loans, and legal funding, today noted the proposed $800 million agreement between the Archdiocese of New York and a committee representing survivors of childhood sexual abuse. The proposal covers approximately 1,300 claims filed under New York’s Child Victims Act. It remains subject to final documentation and the agreement of participating survivors.

Under the reported framework, eligible claimants would have a $250,000 quick-pay option. A survivor who does not choose that fixed amount may instead submit a claim for individual evaluation. Legal Bay understands that a points-based claims matrix is contemplated for that process, but the final scoring criteria and procedures have not been made public. Any award through individual evaluation may be higher or lower than the quick-pay amount, depending on the final rules and the facts of the claim.
The proposed $800 million fund would be financed in two installments: approximately $615 million initially and a further $185 million within approximately 15 months. Those are payments into the settlement fund; the proposal does not yet establish that each individually evaluated claimant will receive two separate checks. The timing and clergy sex abuse settlement amounts of individual distributions remain to be determined.
“For survivors who have waited years to be heard, an $800 million proposal is an important step toward resolution,” said Chris Janish, CEO of Legal Bay. “While the quick-pay option may make sense in certain lower value claims, it does not always create fair settlement amount for many of the claims. Others may have to wait to go through the claims matrix to get fair value. This is where a legal funding advance can be used to a plaintiff’s advantage to maximize claim value.”
If you’re a lawyer or plaintiff involved in an active Archdiocese, Diocese, clergy sexual abuse, or other institutional abuse lawsuit and need an immediate cash advance against an impending lawsuit settlement, please visit Legal-Bay HERE or call toll-free at 877.571.0405.
The proposed settlement also preserves an avenue for plaintiffs to seek additional recoveries from the Archdiocese’s insurers. Any proceeds from those claims would be directed to a trust for the survivors. The Archdiocese would maintain and update its list of credibly accused clergy and provide related records to Iona University, according to the plaintiffs’ liaison committee.
Legal Bay is monitoring the settlement process for clients and counsel with pending Archdiocese claims. The company does not determine eligibility or settlement value, and no claimant should assume an award or payment date until the governing documents and claims procedures are finalized.
Legal Bay has extensive experience providing pre settlement funding, settlement funding, lawsuit loans, lawsuit funding, legal funding, loans on lawsuits, loans on lawsuit, and lawsuit cash advances to qualified survivors involved in clergy and institutional sexual abuse litigation. These cases can take years to resolve, leaving plaintiffs to face financial hardship while waiting for settlements and compensation to be finalized. Legal Bay’s non-recourse pre settlement funding can provide qualified plaintiffs with immediate monetary assistance while their attorneys continue pursuing their claims.
Legal Bay continues to closely monitor recent Catholic Diocese and Archdiocese settlements nationwide. Recent cases the company has followed and funded include Rockville Centre, NY, with a $323 million court-approved settlement; Rochester, NY, with a $246–$256 million approved settlement; and Syracuse, NY, with a $176 million approved settlement. Other recent matters have included Albany, NY; Buffalo, NY; Camden, NJ; and New Orleans, LA, where substantial clergy sexual abuse settlements have moved through various stages of negotiation, approval, and distribution.
As these clergy sexual abuse cases continue moving toward resolution, Legal Bay is currently updating its Archdiocese and Diocese funding list and expects to announce a major expanded list of cases eligible for pre settlement funding in early October. The company will continue evaluating opportunities to provide legal funding and lawsuit funding to qualified survivors who may otherwise face lengthy waits for compensation.
Legal Bay LLC provides non-recourse pre settlement funding, lawsuit funding, settlement funding, lawsuit loans, and legal funding to plaintiffs in pending litigation, and has been an outspoken advocate for survivors pursuing clergy and institutional abuse claims. Funding is subject to case review and the applicable agreement. Repayment is required only if the plaintiff successfully receives compensation from the underlying lawsuit or settlement.
