James Constantinou: The entrepreneur who turned setbacks into success
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

When James Constantinou was expelled from school at just 15 years old, few would have imagined he would one day become one of Britain’s well-known entrepreneurs.

Without qualifications and with little expectation from those around him, he could easily have accepted that his future had already been decided. Instead, he chose to write his own story.

James said: “I’ve never believed that one decision, one exam result or one setback defines who you are.

“Being expelled could’ve been the end of my ambitions if I’d let it. Instead, it became the point where I realised nobody was going to build a future for me. If I wanted something, I’d have to go out and create it myself.”

That mindset has shaped every stage of his career.

Today, James is the Founder and CEO of Prestige Pawnbrokers, one of the UK’s leading luxury asset lenders. The business, now worth 40 million pounds, specialises in some of the world’s most desirable brands, from Hermès handbags and Rolex watches to fine jewellery, classic cars and rare collectables. He is also the face many viewers recognise from Channel 4’s Posh Pawn.

Yet James is quick to point out that success didn’t happen overnight.

He said: “People usually see where you end up, not what came before it.

“There were plenty of risks, plenty of mistakes and plenty of moments where things didn’t go to plan. That’s part of building a business. You learn a lot more from the difficult days than the easy ones.”

Rather than following a traditional career path, James found himself drawn to business from an early age. He discovered he enjoyed buying, selling and negotiating, developing an instinct for spotting value where others often overlooked it.

He said: “I’ve always loved the challenge of seeing potential.

“Whether that’s an opportunity, a business idea or an item someone else has undervalued, I’ve always been fascinated by finding value.”

That instinct eventually led him to establish Prestige Pawnbrokers, a business that has helped transform public perceptions of an industry that many people misunderstood.

James said: “When people hear the word ‘pawnbroking’, they think of the traditional high street approach.

“What we do is very different. Our clients might own a rare watch, a piece of art, a classic car or a designer handbag. They don’t necessarily want to sell those things, but they may want to access funds without parting with their assets. We provide that flexibility.”

His expertise attracted television producers, leading to the Channel 4 series Posh Pawn. The programme gave viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the world of luxury asset lending and introduced millions of people to extraordinary items that rarely leave private collections.

James said: “The programme opened people’s eyes.

“It showed that every item has a story behind it. Sometimes it’s a family heirloom,  an investment, or tied to a significant moment in someone’s life. Those stories are just as interesting as the objects themselves.”

Television brought national recognition, but James has never stood still.

As shopping habits are changing constantly, Prestige Pawnbrokers has expanded its online presence, embracing platforms such as TikTok Live to showcase authenticated luxury goods to a growing audience while maintaining the expertise and trust the business has become known for.

He said: “You can’t build a business by assuming what worked ten years ago will work forever.

“Customers change, technology changes and expectations change. If you’re not prepared to evolve, someone else will.”

Despite working with some of the world’s most valuable luxury items, James believes the principles behind business are surprisingly simple.

He said, “It’s about relationships.

“People buy from people they trust. Whether someone is borrowing against a watch, buying a handbag or asking for advice, they need confidence in the person they’re dealing with. That’s something we’ve always focused on.”

Looking back, James says being expelled from school is not something he sees as negative.

James said: “Of course I wish things had been different, but I wouldn’t change my journey.

“It forced me to become resourceful. It taught me resilience, and that success isn’t handed to you; it’s built through hard work, consistency and being willing to keep going when other people might give up.”

It’s a philosophy that continues to define both the businessman and the brand he has built.

From leaving school without qualifications to becoming one of the UK’s most recognisable luxury entrepreneurs, James Constantinou’s journey is a reminder that the most successful careers rarely follow the path anyone expects.
