FARMINGTON, N.M., Oct. 2, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — How do you choose the right custom home builder? A HelloNation article featuring insights from Steve J. Gabaldon of SJ Gabaldon Construction & Realty provides the answer.
The article explains that choosing a builder involves more than comparing prices. Homeowners should consider experience, organization, builder communication, and how each company manages the home-building process. Reviewing completed homes can also reveal the quality, materials, finishes, layouts, and design details a builder typically handles.
According to the article, homeowners should ask whether a builder has completed projects similar in size, style, and scope to their plans. Relevant experience can make the home-building process easier because the builder may already understand common needs and potential challenges.
Builder communication is another factor to discuss before signing a contract. The article notes that builders may provide updates through scheduled meetings, phone calls, emails, or online systems. Homeowners should know who their main contact will be, how often updates will arrive, and how questions will be addressed.
The article also encourages homeowners to understand the design process early. Some builders create homes from the ground up, while others begin with existing plans that allow selected changes. Knowing which features can be customized helps homeowners compare their options before making a commitment.
Selections for cabinets, flooring, fixtures, appliances, and finishes can influence the construction timeline. The article explains that homeowners should learn when these decisions are due because late selections may delay orders or affect other work.
The article also addresses change orders and recommends understanding the process before construction begins. Homeowners should know how changes are documented, how additional costs are approved, and whether a requested change could affect the construction timeline. A clear process can reduce confusion about costs, responsibilities, and timing.
Scheduling deserves similar attention because home construction depends on workers, inspections, deliveries, weather, and material availability. The article notes that builders may not always provide an exact completion date at the start. However, homeowners should receive an explanation of major construction stages and updates when schedules change.
References from past homeowners can provide information that photos and finished-home tours may not reveal. The article recommends asking previous clients about builder communication, unexpected costs, delays, questions, and change orders. Their experiences can provide a clearer picture of how a builder manages challenges throughout construction.
Contracts and pricing should also be compared carefully. The article advises reviewing allowances, upgrades, materials, site costs, and other expenses included in each estimate. Different prices may reflect different included items, so homeowners should understand what each proposal actually covers.
Ultimately, the article explains that choosing a custom home builder means evaluating the entire working relationship. Experience, pricing, design choices, communication, scheduling, and project procedures all matter. Understanding these details can help homeowners choose a builder based on overall fit rather than price alone.
