New two-story atrium debuts as part of Oosterdam’s Evolution transformation; reimagined Crow’s Nest expands live entertainment experiences

SEATTLE, Oct. 16, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Holland America Line is introducing Bar 1873, a new signature gathering place where contemporary design, cocktails and live music bring more than 150 years of the cruise line’s history to life. Debuting aboard Oosterdam as part of the ship’s Holland America Evolution transformation, the two-story atrium venue will feature a soaring illuminated tulip sculpture, curated heritage displays and comfortable lounges designed for cocktails, conversation and intimate entertainment. As part of the Evolution enhancements, Oosterdam also will debut a reimagined Crow’s Nest, expanding the ship’s live entertainment offerings with new music programming and greater flexibility for activities throughout the day and evening.

Bar 1873 draws inspiration from Queen Juliana's 1958 christening of Rotterdam V, blending Dutch heritage and maritime tradition in a contemporary setting.

Oosterdam’s new Bar 1873 blends Holland America Line history, live music and cocktails in a striking new venue.

Designed to bring Holland America Line’s history to life in a contemporary way, Bar 1873 will become a hallmark of the Holland America Evolution program. Different ships will offer their own interpretation of the venue, drawing inspiration from a different story, tradition or milestone from the cruise line’s more than 150-year history. On Oosterdam, the venue’s theme, May She Be Blessed, honors the maritime tradition of ship christenings and the godmothers who have helped launch generations of Holland America Line ships.

“One of the goals of Holland America Evolution is to celebrate the traditions that have always made us special while introducing fresh experiences for today’s guests,” said Beth Bodensteiner, president of Holland America Line. “Bar 1873 is one of the most exciting examples of that vision. On Oosterdam, we’ve taken an important part of our history and transformed it into a completely new venue. As the concept expands, each bar will draw inspiration from a different part of our heritage, creating a distinct experience aboard every Evolution ship.”

Oosterdam’s Bar 1873 draws from the 1958 christening of Rotterdam V by Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, reflecting Holland America Line’s longstanding connection to the Dutch royal family. Artwork, maritime references and design details throughout the venue will interpret that story, creating a setting that feels contemporary while remaining connected to the people and traditions that have shaped the cruise line. Live piano performances will serve as a centerpiece of the experience during pre-dinner cocktail hours and throughout the evening, complemented by select appearances from vocalists and Holland America Line’s Vivace musicians.

A dramatic centerpiece at the heart of the ship
Designed in partnership with London-based design firm SMC, Bar 1873 is built around Oosterdam’s central atrium on Deck 2. The space is defined by a soaring three-meter illuminated tulip sculpture inspired by the Netherlands’ national flower and Holland America Line’s signature orange tulip. Rising above the venue and visible from multiple vantage points throughout the atrium, the dramatic centerpiece casts intricate patterns of light across the space while serving as a visual tribute to the cruise line’s Dutch roots. Surrounding the tulip are more than 200 heritage and repurposed objects, bespoke artwork and a visual timeline tracing the company’s legacy, creating a layered experience that connects the venue’s contemporary design to Holland America Line’s history.

Oosterdam’s Bar 1873 extends its central narrative through a series of details inspired by the places, people and era behind the story. Vintage-style maps and custom artwork weave together Dutch cultural influences, maritime exploration and the spirit of travel that has defined Holland America Line for more than 150 years. Throughout the space, these elements connect guests to the geography, history and traditions behind the venue’s inspiration.

The design also includes a number of subtle tributes to Holland America Line’s past. Carpets are inspired by the movement of light across the ocean and feature a dramatic centerpiece rug influenced by a clock in the main dining room of SS Rotterdam. The lounge’s grand fireplace draws inspiration from Holland America Line’s original headquarters, now Hotel New York in Rotterdam, reflecting the warmth and hospitality that have long defined the guest experience.

A toast to tradition
Holland America Line has long used its beverage program to tell stories through the glass, creating cocktails inspired by destinations, cultures and moments from the cruise line’s history. Bar 1873 builds on that tradition by bringing those stories beyond the menu and into the design of the venue itself.

Inspired by the maritime tradition of ship christenings and the godmothers who have played an important role throughout Holland America Line’s history, Oosterdam’s Bar 1873 menu is anchored by May She Be Blessed, a celebratory cocktail named for the blessing traditionally bestowed upon a ship before it enters service. Guests will be able to personalize the drink with their choice of essence, creating a personalized toast inspired by one of maritime history’s most enduring traditions.

Alongside the signature cocktail, the menu will feature modern interpretations of classic favorites and original creations inspired by the stories behind each Bar 1873 experience.

Reimagined Crow’s Nest expands entertainment offerings
As part of Oosterdam’s Evolution enhancements, Holland America Line will also introduce a refreshed Crow’s Nest experience. Long known as one of the ship’s most popular gathering spaces thanks to its panoramic ocean views, the venue will offer greater flexibility for activities and entertainment throughout the day and evening.

Expanded live music programming will create additional opportunities for guests to gather, listen and dance while preserving the relaxed atmosphere and scenic setting that have long made Crow’s Nest a guest favorite. The space transitions throughout the day, offering everything from activities and enrichment programming to live music and entertainment in the evening.

In the evening, guests can enjoy performances featuring favorite songs from the 1970s through today. With an engaging, guest-focused approach and a wide-ranging repertoire, the experience is designed to create even more opportunities for live entertainment aboard Oosterdam.

The largest fleet investment in Holland America Line history
As the largest fleet update in the company’s 153-year history, Holland America Evolution will revitalize all six Vista Class and Signature Class ships, beginning with Oosterdam and Zuiderdam and extending to the newly acquired Vista Class ship Arcadia.

Holland America Evolution blends new venues and enhanced experiences with the features guests already know and love, while introducing select elements inspired by the cruise line’s Pinnacle Class ships. Across the fleet, guests can expect refreshed public spaces, updated accommodations and expanded onboard offerings, all while preserving the gracious service, destination-rich travel and perfectly sized ships that define Holland America Line. Bar 1873 is one example of that approach, pairing a fresh new concept with the traditions and hospitality that have long been part of the guest experience.

Bookings are now open for cruises aboard Oosterdam and Zuiderdam following their transformations. Additional details about Holland America Evolution and upcoming ship enhancements are available at hollandamerica.com/evolution.
