America Haunts announces the nation’s most celebrated haunted attractions open between Sept. 11 and Oct. 2 — giving scare-seekers a reason to hit the road and launch Halloween early

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Sept. 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Why wait until October to have fun getting scared? While Halloween merchandise has been creeping onto store shelves since July, the real kickoff to Halloween comes when America’s best haunted attractions open their doors, and serious haunt fans know there’s something special about being there for the season opener.

America's most acclaimed haunted attractions open for the 2026 season.

Eighteen America Haunts member attractions open for the 2026 season between September 11 and October 2, giving thrill-seekers a jump on the season and a chance to experience some of the country’s most celebrated haunted attractions before Halloween is in full swing.

First Fright is opening night- the anticipation of being among the first through the gates, seeing the new surprises, and experiencing the scares before the season is “poof” already over! For fans who plan their Halloween around haunted attractions, it’s a reason to start the season with a road trip, a staycation, or a weekend adventure close to home. Get it on your calendar and be ready for many screams and laughter, as Amber Arnett Bequeaith, spokesperson for America Haunts, advises on the fall ritual.

America Haunts is the nation’s premier haunted attraction association, representing some of the country’s longest-running, largest, and most technically sophisticated haunted experiences. Collectively, America Haunts members entertain more than one million thrill-seekers annually.

“In October, haunts are busy, but our biggest haunt fans love the thrill of First Fright. It’s about being there opening night and getting the bragging rights to be one of the first to conquer your fears going through these acclaimed haunts,” said Arnett-Bequeaith. “It is also fun to kick off your fall holiday early and fit them all in. Families are busy, and our members are destinations in their own right, so opening night can be the perfect excuse for a road trip. Find one within driving distance, book a hotel, explore the community, have dinner, get scared, and make a weekend of it. All before the rest of the goblins are out and about!”

For those ready to make First Fright a fall tradition, the options span the country. From coast to coast, these top haunted attractions offer a range of opening dates for the season—making this list road-trip ready for serious scare-seekers.
