Together, they led a “Healing the Inner Girl” workshop for nearly twenty mothers and daughters. Goodan’s workshops have spanned the United States, Australia, the Caribbean, and Europe — Hangzhou marks her first stop in China.

Their collaboration began in July of this year. Zhang launched a month-long online book club in her community, guiding hundreds of families through Goodan’s work to re-examine adolescent education. A Deep Workshop: From Psychological Safety to Body Autonomy
The workshop unfolded across four stages. Participants were guided to observe their inner critical voice, name it, and separate it from their authentic selves.
In the body course, Goodan pointed out that 81% of girls begin experiencing body image distress from age 10. “Adolescents observe everything,” she reminded the mothers — do not belittle your own appearance in front of your daughters. In the interactive segment, participants wrote negative labels their bodies had been given — “thighs too thick,” “too dark,” “fat” — on paper and stuck them to a model on the left; then wrote body parts they loved — “eyes,” “smile,” “waist” — and stuck them to a model on the right. The exercise became a collective declaration of body autonomy.
The communication course centered on “reflective listening” — listen, suspend judgment, affirm. Goodan guided mother-daughter pairs in practice: the mother would only restate her daughter’s key words and validate her feelings. “I know this disappointed you,” “Your feelings are completely understandable” — these seemingly simple phrases allowed many mothers and daughters to truly hear each other for the first time.
Goodan introduced the 3R tool: Release the labels imposed by others, Reclaim your own definitions, Reframe stigmatized words — for example, rewriting “bossy” as “a natural leader.” That evening, participants tore up and discarded the slips of paper covered in negative labels, symbolizing a farewell to old narratives.
The Light Behind “Disobedience”
During the interactive segment, Zhang Xinyuan wrote down labels she had once carried — “disobedient,” “ambitious” — and shared them with the group. Goodan looked at her and said that it was precisely these traits that had brought her to where she was today. The two embraced; Zhang wept. “Your disobedience is your unique light,” Zhang later told a participant — words that seemed also meant for the girl she herself had once been.
At the end of the three-day workshop, one daughter said she felt “seen” by her mother for the first time; a mother said she realized the person who most needed healing was herself. Goodan closed with a reminder: healing your own inner girl is the best gift you can give your daughter.

The significance of this workshop extends beyond Goodan’s China debut. In the Western context, Goodan’s work focuses on “making women’s voices heard”; in China, Zhang Xinyuan’s 17 years of practice point in the same direction — guiding women from seeking others’ approval to embracing self-worth.
