Historic appointment follows September 23 legislative elections; Prime Minister El Mansouri tasked with forming Morocco’s new government.
WASHINGTON, Sept. 29, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — His Majesty King Mohammed VI today appointed Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as Prime Minister, formally the Kingdom’s Head of Government, making her the first woman to hold the position. She has been tasked with forming Morocco’s new government.
Her appointment follows the September 23 legislative elections, in which the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) won 97 seats, the largest number in the House of Representatives. Under Morocco’s Constitution, the King appoints the Head of Government from the political party that wins the largest number of seats in elections to the House of Representatives.
El Mansouri, 50, is an attorney who most recently served as Minister of National Territory Planning, Land Planning, Housing and City Policy and as Mayor of Marrakech. She has also served as a member of the collective leadership of PAM.
“The appointment of Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as Morocco’s first woman Prime Minister is a historic moment for the Kingdom,” said H.E. Youssef Amrani, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to the United States. “It reflects an important milestone in Morocco’s political life and the continued evolution of its institutions. As Prime Minister El Mansouri begins the process of forming a new government, Morocco enters this next chapter with a clear sense of continuity, stability, and ambition.”
The new government will take office as Morocco prepares to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup and advances a broad national agenda focused on growth, infrastructure, and public services.
H.E. Ambassador Amrani is available for interviews to discuss the historic appointment of Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as Morocco’s first woman Prime Minister, the significance of the appointment following last week’s legislative elections, and the process of forming the new government.
