France’s leading Crémant category celebrates a milestone while looking toward its next chapter.

NEW YORK, Aug. 24, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Fifty years ago, on August 24, 1976, Crémant d’Alsace officially earned Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) status, cementing its place among France’s great sparkling wines. Half a century later, it has become France’s leading AOC Crémant, recognized around the world for its craftsmanship, exceptional value, and unmistakable Alsace character.

Produced using the same meticulous process used for Champagne, Crémant d’Alsace is a driving force behind the Alsace wine industry, representing four out of every ten bottles of AOC wine produced in the region. The leading French AOC Crémant (classification for sparkling wines produced in the traditional method outside of Champagne), Crémant d’Alsace commands one third of the category’s worldwide market share, ahead of Crémant de Loire and Crémant de Bourgogne. This position reflects its growing international recognition.

The U.S. is Crémant d’Alsace’s third-largest export market by value, and by volume, representing 1.291 million bottles /107,600+ cases (12-month cumulative total, July 2025–June 2026, according to French customs).

“U.S. wine drinkers have embraced Crémant d’Alsace for its freshness, versatility, and exceptional value,” says Foulques Aulagnon, Export Manager, Alsace Wines Board (CIVA). “As we celebrate 50 years of the appellation, we’re thrilled to see its recognition continue to grow in the U.S. and to introduce more wine lovers to the quality and distinctive character of Crémant d’Alsace.”

While classic white Crémant d’Alsace Brut remains the category’s foundation, the range continues to evolve, with a focus on premiumization. Producers are placing greater emphasis on single-varietal cuvées (including 100% Chardonnay, only allowed in crémant production), longer lees ageing, and vintage dated bottlings. An expanding offering of elegant rosé Crémants d’Alsace exclusively from Pinot Noir (now 13% of production) and growth in the Extra Brut and Brut Nature/zero dosage categories also reflects changing consumer preferences.

“Crémant d’Alsace is the ultimate insider’s choice: textured, intriguing, and endlessly versatile,” says Matthew Kaner of Will Travel for Wine. “I dare you to find a region producing sparkling wine of this quality offering better value than Alsace.”

Fifty years in, AOC Crémant d’Alsace remains a driving force for this dynamic wine region. With producers bringing new energy and expression to the category while remaining rooted in its heritage, Crémant d’Alsace embraces its future with strong momentum and a growing global audience. Cheers to a bright and bubbly next 50 years!
