Yellowdish, The Fertile Cavendish Breeding Line

The latest breakthrough from Yelloway brings the banana of the future closer: familiar in taste and appearance, commercially viable and resistant to major fungal diseases.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Oct. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Yelloway®, the innovation partnership between Chiquita® and KeyGene, has successfully developed Yellowdish, a fully fertile Cavendish breeding line. For the first time ever, Cavendish’s genetics can be used in mainstream conventional breeding, allowing Yelloway to combine disease-resistance genetics with the agronomic and commercial qualities that make Cavendish the global standard.

Chiquita Yelloway

Yelloway aims to develop new commercially viable banana varieties that resist diseases such as Black Sigatoka and Fusarium wilt, and tolerate climate stresses such as drought and heat.

For broad consumer acceptance, future varieties will need to retain the preferred characteristics of today’s banana: fruits that ripen from green to yellow, peel easily, have no seeds, and taste as good as – or better than – the banana consumers know today. With this breakthrough, Yelloway is closing in on delivering that new generation of bananas.

Cracking a long-standing scientific barrier

Cavendish is a ‘triploid’ banana, meaning it has three sets of chromosomes instead of two, which typically makes it sterile.

“For years, the only way to access its genetics was to perform thousands of manual crosses in the hope of producing just one or two seeds,” said Fernando Garcia-Bastidas, Head of the Banana Breeding Program at Yelloway. “Now, however, decades of breeding experience, a deeper scientific understanding of the factors driving banana fertility and the application of advanced information technology have come together to produce entirely natural Cavendish plants that retain 100% Cavendish genetics and are also fertile.”

These plants have been successfully crossed with disease-resistant Yelloway varieties, producing viable offspring that are now growing in Yelloway’s breeding facility.

Why Cavendish?

Cavendish remains the backbone of the global banana industry. It yields well, can be harvested green, ripens en route to market and is loved for its taste. These qualities have made it the commercial engine behind the banana category for major retailers worldwide. Using this fertile line to breed new Cavendish-like varieties that also resist diseases such as Black Sigatoka and Fusarium wilt Tropical Race 4 (TR4) is Yelloway’s next step toward a more sustainable banana industry.

With this breakthrough, Yelloway reaffirms its ambition to make at least one commercial variety available to key partners through early release by 2030.

About Yelloway

Yelloway is a science and innovation partnership between Chiquita and KeyGene, established in 2020 to unlock banana genetic diversity and accelerate the development of disease-resistant, commercially viable banana varieties through classical breeding supported by advanced technology.
