In-store costume contest, giveaways and special offers bring Halloween fun to participating Rural
King stores, with two $500 grand prizes up for grabs
MATTOON, Ill., Oct. 12, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Rural King, a family-owned retailer dedicated to the rural lifestyle, is inviting customers and their animals to get into the Halloween spirit during Pet-O-Ween, a free in-store pet and livestock costume contest taking place Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at participating Rural King stores.
Customers can dress up their animals and enter them in one of two categories, Pet or Livestock, with Rural King associates judging the costumes beginning at 1 p.m. Pet-O-Ween will also feature giveaways and special in-store offers throughout the day.
“Pet-O-Ween gives our customers a fun way to celebrate Halloween with the animals that are such an important part of their families, farms and everyday lives,” said Rural King Interim Vice President of Marketing Cody Kay. “We love seeing the creativity our customers bring to the costume contest, and we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone into our stores for a memorable day.”
At each participating store, first-, second- and third-place winners will be selected in both the Pet and Livestock categories. Every winner will receive a 15-inch XL Billie Goat plush, along with coupons redeemable for eligible Purina pet food for Pet category winners or Nutrena livestock feed for Livestock category winners. First-place winners will receive six coupons, second-place winners will receive four and third-place winners will receive two.
This year’s Billie Goat plush honors the memory of Billie Jean Lawyer, mother of Rural King Pet Buyer Blayne Lawyer. Billie Jean was a lifelong animal lover whose family farm was home to goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks, dogs, cats and a donkey, with goats holding a particularly special place in her heart. The tribute inspired this year’s Billie Goat giveaway as a way to celebrate her love of animals and connection to Rural King.
The competition will continue beyond the store level. One Pet winner and one Livestock winner will be selected from the pool of store-level winners across participating locations, with each grand prize winner receiving a $500 Rural King gift card. Grand prize winners will be announced on Rural King’s Facebook page.
Pet-O-Ween festivities begin at 10 a.m. with additional giveaways and offers, including a free Mini Billie Goat plush for the first 50 customers and 50% off eligible Purina pet treats that fit inside a limited-edition Rural King Pet-O-Ween “Trick or Treat” bag for the first 100 customers. Customers can also buy eight and get four free on select 5.5-ounce Friskies single cans of wet cat food while supplies last.
Pet-O-Ween will be held Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at participating Rural King stores, excluding Ohio locations. Offers are valid in stores only while supplies last.
