The newly published memoir, And Then What Happened?, chronicles how the actress behind Zelda Gilroy on Dobie Gillis reinvented herself across five decades of law, activism, and public service after Hollywood closed its doors.

CHARLESTON, S.C., Oct. 14, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Palmetto Publishing has released And Then What Happened?, a memoir by Sheila James Kuehl that traces her life from child performer on early radio and television to one of California’s most consequential political figures. The book is now available in print and digital formats through major retailers.

And Then What Happened? Book Cover

Kuehl began performing at the age of eight, eventually earning a place in American pop culture as Zelda Gilroy on the hit series The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. The character she portrayed was, by her own account, the only girl on the shows of the era allowed to be intelligent, inventive, and strategic. The memoir moves through the golden age of television with specific, firsthand detail, capturing the world of early Hollywood from the perspective of a young actress navigating an industry that rewarded conformity above all else.

That conformity carried a steep price. When suspicion about her sexual orientation surfaced, Kuehl’s acting career ended. The book recounts what followed: a pivot to academia as an Associate Dean of Students at UCLA during the era of campus revolution and anti-war activism, a law degree from Harvard, the co-founding of the California Women’s Law Center, and ultimately a historic entry into electoral politics. She became the first openly gay or lesbian person elected to the California State Legislature, serving 14 years before joining the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, where she helped govern ten million people through a global pandemic.

Sheila James Kuehl stated, “I wrote this book because every pivot in my life started with a closed door and the stubborn question, ‘And then what happened?’ I hope readers who have faced that same moment of reinvention see that saying “yes” to the unexpected can change not just one life but millions.”

The memoir arrives at a time of renewed public interest in LGBTQ+ history, feminist advocacy, and the personal costs of political service. It will find a natural readership among fans of George Takei’s They Called Us Enemy and Barbara Boxer’s The Art of Tough. Kuehl’s story sits at the intersection of entertainment history, civil rights, and California politics, offering a firsthand account of cultural shifts that shaped the state and the nation over more than five decades.

And Then What Happened? is available for purchase online at Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, and Bookshop.org. For more information about the author, please contact her directly at Kuehl.Website@gmail.com.

About the Author: Sheila James Kuehl is a pioneering public servant, Harvard Law graduate, and former child actress whose career spans entertainment, academia, activism, and government. She made history as the first openly gay or lesbian person elected to the California State Legislature, where she served for 14 years before going on to serve as a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. Before entering politics, she was widely recognized as Zelda Gilroy, the iconic, brilliantly strategic girl on the popular Dobie Gillis television series, following six years playing Jackie Erwin on Trouble With Father, one of the first TV series to be made on film.

In her memoir, And Then What Happened?: My Life From Zelda to Politics, Kuehl chronicles the pivots that defined her extraordinary life. When suspicion about her sexual orientation ended her acting career, she turned to her other passion: education and justice. She served as an Associate Dean of Students at UCLA during a period of turbulent revolution, anti-war activism, and the growth of feminism. A combination of magic and intention, as she describes it, led her to Harvard Law School, where she prepared for the battles ahead as a feminist and gay rights activist, law professor, and eventually a groundbreaking legislator. Her story is one of reinvention, resilience, and purpose.

Now retired from public office, Kuehl lives in Santa Monica, California. Her memoir reflects the optimism and determination that have driven every chapter of her life, offering readers an intimate and uplifting account of what happens when setbacks become springboards.
