Written from the chair beside the infusion bed, Thursday With A View, Jennifer’s Journey Through Incurable Cancer, is now available from Palmetto Publishing as a “Living Memoir,” encompassing a sweeping Martha’s Vineyard love story and years of ongoing cancer treatment in Boston.
CHARLESTON, S.C., Oct. 6, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Palmetto Publishing has released Thursday With A View: Jennifer’s Journey Through Incurable Cancer, a narrative memoir by Roby McCoy, providing a perfect story to tell for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The book offers a caregiver’s account of a breast cancer diagnosis, its return as metastatic disease, and then focuses on the strength and commitment necessary to live through years of treatment. McCoy, after a long career in television production and media sales, wrote journal entries from the chair beside his wife’s infusion bed, and then wrapped their love story around them.

The book opens on a summer afternoon in Oak Bluffs, on Martha’s Vineyard. Jennifer pulls her car to the shoulder with the radio playing a favorite song and hears her doctor say the word cancer. Two years later the disease comes back, metastatic, with a three-to-five-year life expectancy attached to it. McCoy records an initial eighteen weeks of chemotherapy, then a second eighteen, and then a treatment schedule set to run for the rest of her life. He also records how his wife went to work nearly every day during treatment, losing 30 pounds in a matter of weeks, in the relentless pursuit of living.
His journal entries trace the arc of treatment from consultations and blood counts…to hair left in gobs on pillows during painful chemotherapy treatments…and recall a nurse who felt like an old friend from the very first morning. McCoy reaches back into the couple’s history to give his journal entries greater meaning: the party at his future wife’s family home, where he decided in a single evening that he would marry her, the years following with the couple living in Manhattan and Boston, the weddings and funerals, the international travel, and the grief felt from a best friend dying too young.
Fear and depression appear on the page alongside: stubborn joy, the musical soundtrack of their lives, and a deep sense of gratitude forged while facing unforeseen challenges on a daily basis.
Roby McCoy stated, “I wrote this memoir from the chair next to the bed, one day at a time, while walking through any door we had to…because that’s how we learned to live with incurable cancer. What I hope a reader takes from reading this memoir…is that when they discover hope and fear sitting in the same room, they can still be grateful for the day ahead.”
The book is positioned for anyone affected in any way by cancer, especially readers in midlife and later who have sat in hospital waiting rooms with someone they love, as patients, caregivers, family, or friends, touched by cancer. It follows a shelf that includes Nina Riggs’s The Bright Hour: A Memoir of Living and Dying and Audre Lorde’s The Cancer Journals, both written from the patient’s vantage point. McCoy’s contribution is the caregiver’s side of that story, a perspective rarely published in the cancer memoir category.
Thursday With A View is available for purchase online at Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com. For more information, please visit robymccoy.com.
About the Author: Roby McCoy grew up an only child in the mill town of Lowell, Massachusetts, lost his father at thirteen months old, and spent the formative years of his career behind a camera, including six years as a director of photography for nationally syndicated television. He was a confirmed bachelor, rushing out of the Time-Life Building in New York City on a Friday afternoon to catch a flight to Martha’s Vineyard, when he met his wife, Jennifer, at a party on the island, and decided, before the night was over, that he was going to marry her.
Twenty-plus years later, Jennifer was diagnosed with breast cancer. Two years later, it returned as metastatic disease that will never let go. Thursday With A View: Jennifer’s Journey Through Incurable Cancer, began as journal entries written in infusion rooms at Massachusetts General Hospital during chemotherapy. Those journals grew into a memoir of their marriage, their friends, their island, and the Thursdays that shape their new life together. It belongs on the shelf with The Bright Hour and The Cancer Journals, with one crucial difference: this is the caregiver’s account, told by the man holding a weary hand.
McCoy also writes songs on acoustic guitar, plays golf at Farm Neck, and once helped a small committee of neighbors restore three historic Martha’s Vineyard lighthouses, rescuing them from becoming thin metal poles with tiny beacons on top. He and Jennifer live in New England and spend lots of time on the island where they met. He can be found at robymccoy.com.
