New race-ready trail system adds to the Moab area’s renowned mountain biking offerings with trails
for youth racing, adaptive cyclists, families and riders of varying abilities

MOAB, Utah, Sept. 11, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Mud Springs Trail System, a new mountain biking destination near Moab, has officially opened in San Juan County, bringing miles of purpose-built trails for youth racing, adaptive cycling, families and riders of varying abilities.

Local and regional partners celebrated the opening with a ribbon cutting Sept. 11, marking the culmination of a nearly decade-long effort to create a new race-capable public trail system. The opening coincided with the first Utah High School Cycling League race weekend at Mud Springs, bringing more than 1,100 youth mountain bikers to the area.

Mud Springs features fast, flowy, machine-built trails with bermed turns. Phase 1 will total approximately 11 miles, including seven miles of beginner- and intermediate-level trails constructed last fall and approximately 3.5 additional miles of intermediate- and advanced-level trails expected to be completed this season.

“Moab is known around the world for mountain biking, and Mud Springs gives riders another way to experience what makes this area so special,” said Michael Soleta, director of the Moab Office of Tourism. “With incredible views of the La Sal Mountains and trails designed for a range of riders, Mud Springs complements experiences like Slickrock and The Whole Enchilada while adding another accessible option for families, adaptive cyclists and those newer to the sport. It’s an exciting addition to the world-class riding experiences that continue to make Moab a bucket-list mountain biking destination.”

Mud Springs adds to the Moab area’s extensive network of mountain biking experiences, from renowned rides like Slickrock and The Whole Enchilada to beginner- and intermediate-friendly options including the Moab Brands trail system, Klonzo and Dead Horse Point State Park. Local bike shops, guides, rental providers and shuttle services further make the area’s trail systems accessible to visitors with a range of experience levels.

In addition to recreational riding, Mud Springs was designed to accommodate future youth and adult mountain biking races, adaptive cycling competitions and running events. The trail system will see a return of the Utah High School Cycling League when they return on Sept. 26 and host its Region 3 race. The event will mark the first league race held in Moab since 2022 and the first competition on a full adaptive course at Mud Springs.

Accessibility was incorporated into the trail development process. The National Ability Center provided handcycles for trail staff to ride during training, giving them firsthand experience with how adaptive equipment interacts with trail features.

The Sept. 11 celebration included remarks and a ceremonial ribbon cutting, followed by a course pre-ride by Utah High School Cycling League athletes.

Mud Springs is now open to the public, expanding mountain biking opportunities in the greater Moab area for riders of varying ages and abilities.
