New Debt.com Survey Uncovers America’s Silent Crisis: 78% Carry Financial Regret, Driven by Surging Credit Card Balances and Constant Anxiety

Latest national data reveals a sharp jump in multi-card reliance, widespread retirement fears, and an unexpected generational shift in financial anxiety.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Oct. 28, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Financial regret is officially a national epidemic. According to a comprehensive new survey by Debt.com, nearly 8 in 10 Americans (78%) carry at least one major financial regret—and for a growing number of consumers, that burden is never far from their thoughts.

Juggling high balances on six credit cards isn’t money management — it’s reacting to a crisis.

While everyday cost-of-living pressures dominate headlines, the survey’s most shocking revelations expose how Americans are increasingly leaning on high-interest plastic to survive, while others face their golden years completely unprepared.

Key findings from the Debt.com Financial Regret Survey include:

  • The Plastic Trap is Expanding: For the second consecutive year, charging too much on credit cards is America’s #1 financial regret, climbing to 24% (up from 21%).
  • The Multi-Card Epidemic: The crisis is deeply linked to card proliferation. The share of regretful consumers carrying six or more credit cards has surged to 16%, a dramatic jump from just 10% in initial benchmarks.
  • Debt That Never Sleeps: Financial stress is taking a heavy psychological toll. Over one-third (37%) of those with credit card regret state that their debt is always on their mind, with another 32% thinking about it multiple times a week.
  • The Retirement Blind Spot: Among those regretting their lack of retirement savings, 1 in 5 (20%) have not saved a single dollar for their future—a figure that has worsened since last year. Meanwhile, Baby Boomers report the highest level of regret (48%) for not starting sooner.

“When people are juggling six different credit cards and carrying balances month after month, they aren’t managing money—they’re reacting to a crisis,” said Howard Dvorkin, CPA, Chairman of Debt.com. “People are relying on plastic as a lifeline to absorb inflation and rising living costs. But you cannot outsmart high interest rates. When over a third of consumers say their credit card debt is constantly on their mind, we aren’t just looking at a balance sheet problem; we’re looking at an exhaustion crisis.”

Shocking Consumer Realities at a Glance:

  • Among those regretting their credit card use, the vast majority carry significant balances: 40% owe between $5,000 and $15,000, and 22% owe between $15,001 and $30,000.
  • Six-figure student loan remorse has dropped sharply (only 4% owe $100k–$200k), while regret has spiked among moderate borrowers—nearly 4 out of 10 (39%) regret borrowing between $25,000 and $50,000.
  • For Millennials, homeownership is a double-edged sword; while some regret missing out, 9% regret buying altogether—largely driven by unexpected maintenance and repairs (57%) and high interest rates (43%).

Taking Back Control: Debt.com’s 4 Steps to Overcome Financial Regret

  • Audit Your Cards: With the multi-card epidemic on the rise, stop using the cards you are trying to pay off. List out every card, its balance, and its interest rate to prioritize which one to tackle first.
  • Face the Psychological Toll: Recognize that constant worry is a sign of burnout. Give yourself permission to break the cycle by shifting from a reactive mindset (“just surviving month-to-month”) to an active recovery plan.
  • Seek Professional Guidance: Don’t suffer in silence. Reach out to certified financial professional to explore structured options that can get you on the right track.
  • Build a Small Emergency Buffer: Since many credit card traps start from unexpected emergencies, try to build even a modest safety net so minor car repairs or medical bills don’t immediately force you back onto high-interest plastic.
