The trade underlines the growing importance of greenhouse gas quota reductions in decarbonisation

HAMBURG, Germany, Aug. 24, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — The first transaction in German greenhouse gas (THG) quota reductions has been initiated on the Argus Open Markets (AOM®) platform, marking a significant step forward in the evolution of Germany’s THG quota market towards greater transparency, price discovery and trading efficiency.

Argus Media Logo

Global energy and commodity price reporting agency Argus operates AOM platforms across a range of markets, enabling participants to post bids and offers, discover counterparties and initiate transactions within a transparent and auditable framework.

The THG quota market allows market participants to buy and sell in the transfer of greenhouse gas reductions from quota generators and poolers to obligated fuel suppliers who need to meet annual greenhouse gas reduction targets.

Until now, the THG quota market has been an over-the-counter market characterised by bilateral negotiations, limited liquidity and relatively low transparency. As a result, market participants have often faced challenges in understanding where market value lies and in identifying trading opportunities. AOM trading has the potential to change that.

The market is growing in importance as Germany pursues increasingly ambitious transport decarbonisation targets. The country’s implementation of the EU’s latest Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) will increase compliance requirements and is likely to reinforce the role of THG quota reductions in achieving greenhouse gas reduction objectives.

Argus Media chairman and chief executive Adrian Binks said: “Argus plays a key role in improving transparency in the market through its reporting, market intelligence and price assessments. The first THG quota trade initiated on AOM® represents a further step in that process, providing participants with a platform that combines price discovery, market transparency and electronic trade initiation for a product which has traditionally traded through less transparent bilateral channels.”
