Don’t Let Sour Candy Haunt Your Smile! The Minnesota Dental Association Shares Halloween Tips

MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Candy may be part of Halloween, but cavities don’t have to be! This Halloween, the Minnesota Dental Association (MDA) warns that sour candies can pack a powerful punch, and not just for your taste buds, but for your tooth enamel, too!

What makes sour candy so sour? Acid! Acid can weaken and wear away enamel, the protective outer layer of your teeth. Once enamel is lost, it’s gone for good, so protecting it is important.

The good news? A few simple choices can help protect teeth while enjoying the holiday. The MDA recommends skipping the sour and trying these tooth-friendly tricks instead:

  • Choose treats wisely. Chocolate is generally a better option than sticky, chewy, or sour candies because it clears from teeth more easily.
  • Enjoy treats with meals. Saliva production increases during meals, helping rinse away food and neutralize acids.
  • Skip the constant snacking. Frequent snacking, especially on sugary treats, increases cavity risk. Choose healthier options like nuts, fruits, vegetables, or crackers.
  • Chew sugar-free gum with the ADA seal. Chewing for 20 minutes after eating boosts saliva, washes away food, and neutralizes cavity-causing acids. Look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance.
  • Keep up your routine. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and floss every day.

Looking for a treat that won’t add to the sugar rush? Think beyond candy! Stickers, pencils, bookmarks, or glow sticks are fun alternatives that keep the Halloween spirit alive and bring smiles to trick-or-treaters of all ages.
