Cooling Mattress (2026): NELL Named for Japanese Craftsmanship and Breathable Sleep Design by Consumer365

NEW YORK, Sept. 11, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Consumer365 has named NELL in its 2026 cooling mattress coverage, looking closely at how the Japanese sleep brand uses dense pocket-coil construction and thin material layers to support airflow during the night. Cooling claims can refer to covers, gels, foams, or internal ventilation. The report also explains which parts of a mattress are responsible for managing heat over several hours of sleep.

Best Cooling Mattress:

  • NELL – a Japanese sleep brand offering handcrafted pocket-coil mattresses designed for breathable, responsive support

The announcement follows NELL’s first U.S. launch. Founded in 2020, the company became Japan’s leading direct-to-consumer coil mattress brand by 2025, based on direct-to-consumer coil mattress sales in the country. More than 220,000 customers have purchased from the brand, according to company information.

Why Did Consumer365 Recognize NELL?

Consumer365’s coverage examines the NELL Mattress as an example of cooling design built around coil engineering rather than thick foam. A king-size model contains 4,704 individually wrapped pocket coils, approximately four times the 500 to 1,000 coils commonly found in mattresses, according to NELL.

Each coil responds independently to pressure. The system is configured with firmer support through the middle and perimeter, while the shoulder and hip areas provide more contouring. This construction is intended to distribute body weight, limit partner disturbance, and make it easier to turn during sleep.

The mattress also uses thin layers of foam and cotton. Air can pass around the coils and through these layers, helping heat and moisture leave the sleep surface.

Why Does Breathable Construction Matter?

Cooling mattress design depends partly on how materials manage body heat over several hours. Pocket coils leave open space inside the mattress, offering another path for air circulation.

NELL addresses several practical sleep needs:

  • Airflow through the coil structure and thin comfort layers
  • Responsive support without a deep sink-in sensation
  • Independent coil action intended to limit motion transfer
  • Firmer reinforcement through the middle and perimeter

How Is Japanese Craftsmanship Built Into the NELL Mattress?

NELL mattresses are handcrafted in Okawa, Fukuoka, a Japanese city with a long furniture-making history. Founder Koki Doi worked with local artisans and engineers while studying sleep science and mattress performance across a full night.

The development process included more than 300 spring prototypes. The final coil specification was calibrated in increments of 0.1 millimeter, and custom machinery was built specifically for its production.

Those details provide context for Consumer365’s assessment. The mattress is engineered around long-term support, airflow, and durability rather than the first few seconds of softness experienced in a showroom.

How Does NELL Address Long-Term Ownership?

Mattress performance can change as foam softens and materials experience years of nightly use. NELL limits the amount of polyurethane foam in its design and relies primarily on a pocket-coil support structure intended to retain its form over time.

U.S. customers receive a 365-night home trial, with free collection available for eligible comfort-related returns after at least 14 nights. Each mattress also includes a lifetime warranty. Delivery is free throughout the United States except Alaska and Hawaii, where an additional fee applies.

What Does the U.S. Launch Mean for Mattress Buyers?

NELL’s entry into the United States adds a Japanese-made option in twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king sizes. Its design treats breathability as part of the internal structure, pairing individually wrapped coils with thin cotton and foam layers. Consumer365’s coverage looks at how this construction helps manage heat, respond to pressure, and maintain support over time.

What Is the Main Takeaway?

NELL’s inclusion in Consumer365’s 2026 cooling mattress coverage places Japanese manufacturing and internal airflow within the same sleep-design discussion. The assessment offers a practical way to evaluate cooling claims by looking beneath the mattress cover and examining how construction affects heat management across an entire night. For U.S. shoppers, NELL offers another engineering-led option to the cooling mattresses currently available in the market.
