BEIJING, Oct. 16, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — The 78th Frankfurt Book Fair opened in Frankfurt, Germany, on Wednesday, bringing together more than 4,000 publishing institutions from over 100 countries and regions. The five-day fair, the world’s largest publishing industry event, ran through Sunday at the Messe Frankfurt exhibition center and drew some 230,000 visitors. China National Publications Import & Export (Group) Co., Ltd organized over 130 representatives from more than 80 domestic publishing and cultural institutions to participate in this fair.
Under the theme of “Reading China,” China Pavilion at the heart of the fair showcased thousands of selected titles, combining book displays, rights negotiations, cultural exchanges and interactive experiences. Over the five days, hundreds of Chinese publishing houses arranged a packed schedule of seminars, author dialogues, copyright signing ceremonies and new book launches.
For many international visitors, the booth offered a window into China—its history, culture and changing ways of life. The display ranged from Chinese and foreign-language editions of works on China’s development philosophy to classics of traditional culture and titles in the social sciences, technology and the arts. Sharing the floor were creative products inspired by Dunhuang and Sanxingdui and digital-publishing exhibits from Yuewen (China Literature), Tencent and miHoYo, creating the seamless trajectory from digital cultural products to multidimensional cultural experiences.
Across the fair, dialogue and practical cooperation were the common thread, with Chinese publishers hosting 55 symposia, author conversations, signings and book launches. Academic publishing was a focus: Chinese science and university presses signed a series of joint-publishing agreements with Springer Nature, Zhejiang University Press sealed a global e-book distribution partnership with De Gruyter Brill, and copyright deals were reached with partners in Italy, Russia, Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates. A dialogue on the ideal bookstore and exhibits on innovative Chinese bookstores and green printing rounded out the program.
Literature and the arts generated some of the fair’s most personal exchanges. On the fair’s official Global Stage, Chinese writer Zhang Yiwei, German writer Yandé Seck and publisher Peng Lun discussed the much-noted “disappearance of the nearby,” using everyday life in Shanghai and Frankfurt to ask how strangers can become “one of us” and offering international readers a warmer, more human view of China. Traditional art was represented by an exhibition of the Comprehensive Collection of Ancient Chinese Paintings, while rights offers—from My Altay and Liu Cixin’s fairy tale The Fire Keeper to new Chinese science fiction—underscored the growing variety of Chinese writing in translation.
Chinese publishing will continue to deepen practical cooperation with partners worldwide, bringing more Chinese works, scholarship and contemporary stories to an ever-wider international audience. As many participants at the fair observed, books remain one of the most enduring bridges between civilizations, helping readers move from merely knowing about China to genuinely understanding it.
