Workers who inhale these materials can suffer irreversible lung damage and other serious health complications.
One of the cases highlighted in the Business Insurance article involved stone fabricator Wilmer Ruben Martinez Paredes, who died from silicosis at age 41. A Los Angeles jury found that manufacturers and distributors shared liability relating to alleged failures to adequately warn about the hazards associated with cutting artificial stone products.

Silicosis is a progressive and incurable disease that scars the lungs and impairs breathing. Individuals with advanced forms of the disease require supplemental oxygen, hospitalization, and, in some cases, lung transplantation.
The article also highlighted growing medical concern regarding the aggressive nature of silicosis associated with artificial stone exposure. Unlike traditional cases often linked to mining or sandblasting, many artificial stone countertop workers have developed severe disease at relatively young ages.
Nevin emphasized the severity of these cases, stating:
“This isn’t traditional coal miner, sandblaster silicosis. This is an insane off-the-chart accelerated silicosis that’s causing workers in their twenties to need lung transplants and kidney transplants.”
According to data from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) referenced in the article, 635 patients have been identified with silicosis in California, 124 have required lung transplants, and 35 have died. Researchers have also estimated that approximately 100,000 stone fabrication workers nationwide may face potential exposure risks.
The article further noted that disputes over insurance coverage have become increasingly common as silica-related claims continue to grow. Courts have frequently required insurers to provide defense coverage in silica-related litigation, while some carriers have reportedly reduced their participation in the industry or increased premiums because of mounting claim exposure.

Australia banned artificial stone in 2024, and California regulators are currently developing policies that would prohibit artificial stone fabrication and installation.
