MIAMI, Sept. 16, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Armor Health (ArmorHealthcare.com), a national provider of correctional healthcare, is expanding its distinct, structured approach to addressing postpartum depression (PPD) among women in correctional settings, where postpartum patients face heightened vulnerability and increased mental-health risks.

Armor Health

Armor’s approach is designed around four core principles: early screening, prevention, structured treatment, and evidence-based clinical guidelines. The goal is to identify postpartum depression early, provide consistent intervention, and help ensure continuity of care from custody to community.

The approach was presented by Armor Health clinicians Jared Washington, LPC, and Atrews Bell, LPC, at the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare (NCCHC) Conference in June 2025 as part of From Custody to Community: Postpartum Mental Health Seminar. The presentation focused on the importance of addressing both the physical and mental-health needs of postpartum patients, the heightened risk of postpartum depression among incarcerated women, and policies designed to improve postpartum care and reintegration.

“Postpartum depression is real, common, and treatable—and early intervention matters,” said Armor’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Jimmy Fernandez. “Our responsibility is to recognize the unique needs of postpartum patients in custody and provide a structured clinical pathway that supports them throughout their time in our care and as they prepare to return to the community.”

Armor’s postpartum mental-health framework emphasizes increased monitoring during the critical first four weeks following childbirth. The workflow includes daily rounds by psychiatric technicians, weekly check-ins with behavioral-health professionals, and PHQ-9 screenings. From months two through twelve postpartum, the approach continues with weekly psychiatric-technician rounds, monthly behavioral-health check-ins, and treatment-plan adjustments when clinically appropriate.

The program also emphasizes prevention and continuity of care. Discharge planning begins approximately three months before release and addresses critical factors including housing, mental health, parenting, custody, medication management, and connections to community resources.

For patients experiencing severe postpartum depression or a mental-health crisis, Armor’s framework calls for immediate intervention, 24/7 mental-health access, and avoiding isolation unless clinically necessary.

Armor also recognizes that effective postpartum care requires more than clinical treatment. Annual staff training, consistent documentation, regular progress reviews, quarterly policy evaluation, feedback collection, and data-driven updates are incorporated into the overall framework.

“We believe the inclusion of these additional services for mothers to our holistic and comprehensive health care approach for incarcerated women, addresses a critical need supporting the mother during incarceration and for continuity of care for the mother and their child post release,” added Armor Health CEO, Otto Campo.
