Clinical psychologist Claire Hillenbrand Sherman pairs Jungian theory with reflection, journaling, active imagination and creative exercises

OLDENBURG, Ind., Sept. 8, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — “Discover Wholeness with Carl Jung and His Red Book,” by clinical psychologist Claire Hillenbrand Sherman, translates Carl Jung’s analytical psychology into an approachable guide to self-awareness, personal growth and psychological wholeness.

“Discover Wholeness with Carl Jung and His Red Book” By Claire Hillenbrand Sherman Ph.D.

Aimed at readers who may be curious about Jung but find his original writings challenging, Sherman explains the relationship between the conscious and unconscious mind through clear descriptions of his central ideas.

Jung’s personal experiences, particularly those documented in “The Red Book,” provide a foundation for the discussion. After separating professionally from Sigmund Freud, Jung began an extended period of introspection in which he explored dreams, symbolic images and imagined inner figures. He recorded conversations with these figures and created artwork and mandalas as part of his effort to better understand the unconscious. Those experiences helped shape the analytical psychology for which he later became known.

Sherman connects that history to concepts including the ego, persona, shadow, collective unconscious, archetypes, complexes, projection, and anima and animus. At the center of the book is individuation, Jung’s term for the process of recognizing and integrating the many conscious and unconscious aspects of the personality. The goal is not to eliminate conflicting qualities, but to develop a fuller understanding of how they influence behavior, relationships and a person’s sense of identity.

The book also gives readers opportunities to apply the ideas through reflection questions, writing activities and creative exercises. Among the practices Sherman presents are active imagination, a method Jung used to engage with images and voices from the unconscious, as well as journaling, dream exploration, mindfulness and mandala-making. The exercises are designed to help readers identify patterns, consider overlooked parts of themselves and connect abstract psychological concepts with personal experience.

Throughout the book, Sherman distinguishes psychological wholeness from perfection. Instead, she presents it as a continuing process of becoming more aware of the full range of one’s personality, including qualities that may have been ignored, rejected or left undeveloped. By combining explanations of Jung’s theories with practical opportunities for reflection, “Discover Wholeness with Carl Jung and His Red Book” offers readers a framework for examining identity, relationships, creativity, spirituality and the unconscious forces that can shape everyday life.
