SEOUL, South Korea, April 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Ettifos, a leading provider of C-V2X solutions, announced the successful completion of real-world V2X tolling demonstrations on March 26 in North Carolina.
The demonstrations, in collaboration with Audi and Kapsch TrafficCom, validated low-latency, standards-based communication between Ettifos’ V2X-AIR onboard unit (OBU) and Kapsch’s commercially deployed roadside units (RSUs). The results confirm robust interoperability across a multi-vendor ecosystem under real-world operating conditions.
Conducted as part of the OmniAir Consortium V2X Tolling Workshop, the demonstrations were designed to show real-world tolling using direct sidelink (PC5) Vehicle-to-Infrastructure communication based on standardized V2X protocols.
Demo 1: Audi, Ettifos and Kapsch – Seamless Vehicle-Integrated V2X Tolling
This demonstration showcased a before-market implementation of V2X tolling within an Audi vehicle equipped with Ettifos’ V2X-AIR OBU.
The Ettifos OBU established continuous PC5-based communication with Kapsch’s RSUs as the vehicle traversed the tolling zone, instantly processing standardized V2X tolling messages and displaying acknowledgements on the Audi in-vehicle display.
This scenario validated Ettifos’ V2X-AIR OBU as a device that is not only fully compatible with V2X tolling standards and services, but also seamlessly integrates with OEM services.
In addition to all the safety and efficiency services provided by V2X, V2X tolling is an important and scalable service that enables OEMs to offer drivers a secure and seamless in-vehicle payment system.
Demo 2: Ettifos and Kapsch – Plug-and-Play Aftermarket V2X OBU for Tolling
The second demonstration highlighted Ettifos’ standard-compliant and ready-to-deploy aftermarket V2X OBU, V2X-AIR, which supports V2X safety, efficiency, and tolling services..
The dashboard-mounted OBU received and decoded V2X messages broadcast from Kapsch’s RSUs, dynamically processing tolling events and Traveler Information Messages (TIM) in real time. These were visualized through Ettifos’ application interface, providing immediate driver feedback on tolling transactions and relevant road warnings.
This implementation demonstrated how V2X tolling can be rapidly deployed across existing vehicle fleets prior to commercial OEM integration.
Key Results
- V2X communication for safety services and tolling service validated between OBUs and commercially deployed RSUs
- V2X tolling service successfully delivered and displayed across both OEM and aftermarket implementations
- Seamless interoperability validated across Audi vehicles, Ettifos aftermarket OBU, and Kapsch roadside infrastructure in a live environment
V2X-AIR: BABA-Compliant, Deployment-Ready Aftermarket Solution
At the core of both demonstrations is Ettifos’ V2X-AIR, a compact, plug-and-play on-board unit (OBU) engineered for high-performance V2X communication across both before-market and aftermarket environments.
V2X-AIR supports a full range of standard-compliant V2X services, including tolling and safety applications, and is designed to ensure consistent message processing, low-latency communication, and interoperability across diverse infrastructure and vehicle platforms.
Importantly, V2X-AIR is BABA (Build America, Buy America) compliant, a requirement for devices to be deployed in federally funded U.S. infrastructure projects—making it a practical and scalable solution for agencies and operators advancing next-generation tolling systems.
Enabling Scalable V2X Tolling
These successful multi-vendor demonstrations represent a significant step toward V2X tolling, where direct V2I communication enables deterministic, real-time interaction between vehicles and infrastructure.
By validating both OEM-integrated and aftermarket deployment models, Ettifos has established a scalable pathway for V2X tolling adoption across new vehicle programs and the retrofit of existing fleets.
Ultimately, V2X tolling is an important and scalable service that enables secure and seamless contactless vehicle payment within the evolving mobility ecosystem.
Commenting on the successful demonstrations, Hojun Kim, CEO of Ettifos, said: “By working alongside Audi and Kapsch, we’re proud to contribute to a key milestone in the evolution of V2X tolling. This collaboration demonstrates the importance of interoperability in enabling scalable V2X tolling across the ecosystem, highlighting Ettifos’ role in delivering a solution that supports both OEM and aftermarket implementations for immediate deployment.”
Jason Conley, Executive Director of OmniAir Consortium, added: “Industry collaboration, like this joint demonstration by Ettifos, Kapsch, and Audi, is key to deploying V2X tolling solutions at scale. OmniAir’s V2X Tolling Workshop brings together leaders from the tolling and technology sectors around the world to help shape the requirements for the future of electronic toll collection and in-vehicle payments.”
