MYSTIC, Conn., April 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Chef David Standridge, Executive Chef of The Shipwright’s Daughter in Mystic, Connecticut, has been named a finalist for Outstanding Chef by the James Beard Foundation®, one of the highest honors in the culinary industry.
Standridge’s nomination reflects his growing national recognition for a thoughtful, ingredient-driven approach to coastal New England cuisine, one rooted in sustainability and a strong sense of place. At The Shipwright’s Daughter and Mystic Fish Camp, and through his broader work in Mystic, he has become a leading voice in redefining how seafood is sourced, prepared, and valued.
Central to that work is his commitment to responsibly harvested seafood and the creative use of bycatch, invasive, and underutilized species from local waters. From green crab and sea robin to kelp and other abundant species, Standridge’s cooking showcases the region’s natural bounty while also supporting a more resilient and climate-friendly coastal food system. That philosophy extends to his newest concept, Mystic Fish Camp, a casual, retro-inspired fish shack grounded in the same mission: 100% sustainable, wild-caught, and locally sourced seafood.
“I’m incredibly honored to be chosen from among such an accomplished and talented list of chefs for this recognition,” said Standridge. “The reason we are here is community, from our team in the restaurant to the fishers, farmers and non-profits that support our work. I could not be more grateful to be on this ride with all of you.”
“David’s nomination for Outstanding Chef is an incredibly well-deserved recognition of his talent, leadership, and deep commitment to our community,” said Amanda Arling, president of Heidenreich Hospitality Group. “What sets him apart is not only what he creates on the plate, but the intention behind it – from supporting local partners and regional producers to helping shape a more sustainable and responsible food and beverage industry. This nomination reflects a mission that we’re all proud to be part of. It speaks to the values that guide our work every day and the kind of impact we hope to have beyond our walls. We are so proud of David and deeply grateful for the leadership, integrity, and purpose he brings to our team and our community.”
Standridge was awarded Best Chef: Northeast by the James Beard Foundation in 2024 and continues to be recognized for his leadership in sustainable seafood practices. His nomination also underscores the continued rise of Mystic as a nationally recognized culinary destination.
Often considered the pinnacle of culinary recognition in the United States, the James Beard Awards® celebrate exceptional talent and leadership across the food and hospitality industries, while advancing a vision of “Good Food for Good®.” For nearly four decades, the Awards have served as a benchmark of excellence and a trusted guide to the people shaping American food culture.
Winners will be announced at the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards ceremony on Monday, June 15, 2026, at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
