Where to Go (and Where to Skip) in 2026: The Data-Backed Travel Guide Rewriting the Rules
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Travel in 2026 looks nothing like it did five years ago. The data is clear, the patterns are shifting, and the destinations that are winning are not the ones you might expect.

Every year the travel industry produces a flood of trend reports. Most of them tell you to go somewhere that was already buzzing two years ago. This one is different. It is built on actual search data, real booking numbers and a growing body of evidence that the smartest travellers in 2026 are not following the crowd. They are going in the opposite direction.

So here is the data-backed guide to where to go this year, and more importantly, where to give a miss.

The Destinations Actually Worth Booking Right Now

Big Sky in Montana is the breakout story of 2026. Searches for flights and accommodation there have risen 92 percent in the past year, driven partly by the Yellowstone TV effect and partly by a genuine hunger for space, silence and landscape that has not been filtered through a thousand Instagram posts. It sits on the doorstep of Yellowstone National Park and it rewards the effort of getting there.

japan

Okinawa in Japan is up 71 percent in searches and it is easy to see why. Travellers who love Japan but are exhausted by the crowds in Tokyo and Kyoto have found their answer here. It is slower, warmer, cheaper and genuinely beautiful, with turquoise water and a culture that feels distinct from the Japanese mainland.

In Europe, Sardinia is having a moment it has long deserved. Interest has jumped 63 percent and the island is drawing travellers who want the Mediterranean at its most dramatic without the chaos of the Amalfi Coast or the relentless cruise ship traffic of Dubrovnik.

The Albanian Riviera is another one to watch. It offers the same crystalline water as Croatia or Greece at a fraction of the price, and it has not yet reached the tipping point where locals start to feel overwhelmed by visitors. That window will not stay open forever.

Where the Big Events Are Pulling Travellers

2026 is one of the most stacked years in recent memory for events that genuinely move travel decisions. The FIFA World Cup spreads across North America, with Philadelphia, Kansas City and Mexico City expecting historic numbers. Philadelphia is also hosting the US Semiquincentennial, the country’s 250th birthday, so the city is going to be buzzing on two fronts simultaneously.

The total solar eclipse on August 12 is the single most spectacular event of the year. The path of totality runs across Spain’s Aragon and Basque Country regions, through Iceland and across Greenland. Demand for accommodation in those areas is already steep and climbing. The last time a total solar eclipse crossed northern Spain was 1912. If you want to be there, book now.

The Winter Olympics in Milan and the Dolomites will bring a different crowd, and Glasgow is back in focus as the host of the Commonwealth Games.

The Places to Think Twice About

The counterpart to every rising destination is one that has been loved to the point of exhaustion. Montmartre in Paris now attracts 11 million visitors a year to the Sacre Coeur alone, more than the Eiffel Tower. Locals are protesting. The neighbourhood is struggling to hold onto its identity. It has not disappeared as a destination but it deserves a rethink in terms of how you visit it.

The Canary Islands are facing a genuine crisis. Residents have taken to the streets with banners reading the Canaries have a limit, arguing that mass tourism has driven up housing costs and concentrated money in the hands of large investment groups rather than local communities. If you go, go thoughtfully.

Barcelona, Venice and Santorini have all seen protests in recent years. They are still beautiful. They are also under pressure in ways that are hard to ignore if you are paying attention.

The Bigger Picture

The smartest travel trend of 2026 is not a destination. It is a decision. Travellers are increasingly choosing to go somewhere they have not seen on TikTok, to stay longer in one place rather than ticking off five cities in a week, and to spend money in ways that benefit the places they visit rather than just passing through them. The data shows it, the booking platforms are reporting it and the destinations that are rising fastest are exactly the ones that reward that kind of thinking.
